Glass pool fencing keeps your pool safe and legal without blocking the view you paid for. It is the most requested pool fence style we install across Perth and the South West, and for good reason.
- Uninterrupted views. Supervise swimmers from the house, and keep sightlines to the garden or the ocean.
- More space, visually. Clear panels make small yards and courtyards feel larger.
- Built for the climate. Toughened glass and quality stainless hardware stand up to Perth sun, chlorine and coastal salt.
- Adds value. A well-installed glass fence is one of the features buyers notice first.
This guide covers everything Property Owners need to know: WA pool barrier rules, the three main glass fence styles, glass and hardware options, slopes and retaining walls, costs, maintenance and what to ask your installer. You can also shop every component, check live prices and get an installation estimate as you read.
WA pool fencing rules: what your glass fence must meet
Every private pool or spa in Western Australia deeper than 300mm needs a compliant safety barrier. The rules come from the Building Regulations 2012, which call up Australian Standard AS 1926.1. A glass fence meets them easily when it is designed and installed correctly.
| Requirement | What it means for a glass fence |
|---|---|
| Minimum height 1200mm | Measured from finished ground level outside the fence. Standard pool glass panels are 1200mm high. |
| Maximum 100mm gap at the bottom | The gap between the panel and the ground or paving. Spigot height is set to keep under this. |
| Maximum 100mm gap between panels | Panel and gate gaps must stay under 100mm, including at walls and posts. |
| 900mm non-climbable zone | No pots, furniture, BBQs, trees or retaining walls a child could use to climb, within 900mm of the outside of the fence. |
| Gates swing outward | Pool gates must open away from the pool area. |
| Self-closing and self-latching | The gate must close and latch on its own from any open position. |
| Latch height 1500mm | The latch release must be at least 1500mm above ground, or on the pool side with a shielded opening. |
Your local council inspects pool barriers at least once every four years. A new barrier is inspected soon after it is finished, and any issues must be fixed before the reinspection. See City of Stirling and City of Joondalup for local details.
The fence is only half the job. Most failed inspections come from the area around the fence, like a new pot plant or a garden bed that makes the non-climbable zone climbable. We check this at every measure.
The three types of glass pool fencing
Frameless glass gives the clearest view, semi-frameless costs less, and channel glass gives the most minimal base. All three use 12mm toughened safety glass at 1200mm high.
| Frameless (spigots) | Semi-frameless (posts) | Channel glass (Clearglaze) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How it holds the glass | Stainless spigots at the base of each panel | Glass fixed between 50 x 50mm aluminum posts | Glass set into a continuous low-profile channel |
| Look | Near-invisible, all glass | Clean lines with slim framing | No spigots at all, the most minimal |
| Hardware finishes | Polished, satin or matte black | Monument, Pearl White or Satin Black posts | Channel finish |
| Installed price guide | From about $300 per meter | From about $200 per meter | On quote |
| Best for | Premium pools, views, entertaining areas | Budget-conscious projects, sloping sites | Architectural homes, tight modern designs |
Frameless glass pool fencing
Frameless is the style most people picture: clear panels held by stainless spigots, with nothing above ground but glass and small fittings. Panels come in a range of widths so a run can be matched closely to your pool layout.

Semi-frameless glass pool fencing
Semi-frameless uses the same 12mm glass, held between slim powder coated aluminum posts. You keep most of the view at a lower price, and posts make it easier to step the fence down a slope. See our semi-frameless installations.
Channel glass (Clearglaze)
Channel glass sits in a continuous base channel instead of individual spigots. The result is a seamless line with no fittings breaking up the view, a popular choice for modern and architect-designed homes.

Choosing the glass, spigots and mounting
The glass itself
Pool fence glass must be Grade A toughened safety glass. Ours is 12mm clear toughened glass with the SAI Global certified product mark, meeting AS/NZS 2208 for safety glazing. Edges are polished and corners are tipped for safety.
Why 12mm? It is the standard for fence panels because it is stiff enough to stand on spigots without flexing. Thinner 8mm glass is used for some gates, where it keeps the gate light enough for self-closing hinges to work reliably.
Toughened glass is four to five times stronger than ordinary glass. In the rare event it breaks, it crumbles into small blunt pieces instead of sharp shards.
Core-drilled or base-plate spigots
| Mounting | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Core-drilled | A hole is drilled into concrete and the spigot is set in with grout or epoxy | New or solid concrete and paving, the cleanest look |
| Base-plate | The spigot is bolted to the surface on a flat plate | Decks, existing slabs, and where drilling is not practical |
| Insulated spigot | A spigot with isolation to protect against corrosion | Coastal properties and saltwater pools |
Cover rings hide the drilled hole for a neat finish. Choose a spigot finish to suit your home: polished stainless for a classic look, satin for a softer finish, or matte black for modern homes.
Coastal tip: near the ocean or with a saltwater pool, ask about the stainless grade and insulated spigots. Good hardware and regular rinsing prevent tea staining.

Glass pool gates, hinges and latches
The gate is the part of a pool fence that works hardest and fails inspections most often. It must swing outward, close on its own from any position and latch every time. That comes down to three parts: the gate, the hinges and the latch.
Glass gates
Choose an 8mm glass gate with standard hinges for a lighter, cost-effective option, or a 12mm Polaris gate for a heavier, premium feel. Polaris gates come in glass-to-glass and glass-to-wall versions.

Hinges and hinge panels
The gate hangs from a hinge panel, which is a fixed glass panel pre-drilled for the hinges. Standard self-closing hinges are reliable and affordable. Soft-close hinges, like the Polaris range, slow the gate so it closes gently without slamming, protecting fingers and the glass. Retro-fit soft-close hinges can upgrade an existing gate.

Latches
The right latch depends on where the gate closes: in line with another glass panel, into a corner, at 135 degrees, or against a wall or post. Lockable latches from D&D Technologies add security, and magnetic latches give a positive close with no springs to wear out.

Check your gate every month: open it to different angles and let go. It should close and latch on its own every time. If not, adjust or replace the hinges before your next inspection.
Glass fencing on slopes, steps and retaining walls
Sloping blocks are common in Perth, and glass handles them well. The fence has to keep a 100mm maximum gap at the bottom and a 1200mm minimum height along its full length, so the approach depends on the site.
- Stepped panels: each panel sits at a different level, following the slope in steps. Semi-frameless posts make this especially simple.
- Raked panels: glass cut on an angle to follow a slope or the top of a retaining wall, giving a smooth line instead of steps.
- Custom-cut glass: for diagonal runs, stairs and awkward corners.
Retaining walls need extra care. A wall on the outside of the fence can create a climbable foothold inside the 900mm non-climbable zone. We measure this on site and set the fence height to suit.

How much does glass pool fencing cost in Perth?
Installed glass pool fencing starts from about $200 per meter for semi-frameless and about $300 per meter for frameless. Supply-only prices for every panel and fitting are shown live in the product blocks throughout this guide.
What moves the price:
- Style: frameless and channel glass cost more than semi-frameless.
- Length and layout: corners, short runs and custom-cut panels add cost.
- Gates and hardware: soft-close hinges and lockable latches cost more than standard ones.
- Spigot finish and grade: black and premium coastal hardware cost more than polished.
- Site conditions: slopes, retaining walls, decks and core drilling into hard surfaces.
- Removal: taking away an old fence adds to the job.
DIY supply or professional installation?
Confident DIYers can buy the full glass range from our online store and install it themselves. Keep in mind that 12mm glass panels are heavy, gaps must be set precisely, and the finished fence still has to pass council inspection.
Professional installation means the measure, layout, drilling, gate setup and compliance checks are done for you. Our installation quote link gives you an online estimate. Final pricing is confirmed on site after we measure.
Keeping your glass pool fence clean and compliant
A glass fence needs a little regular care to look its best and pass every inspection.
- Rinse weekly with fresh water to wash off chlorine, salt spray and pool splash before it dries into spots.
- Clean the glass with a soft cloth and a glass cleaner or vinegar and water. Avoid abrasive pads that scratch.
- Wipe the hardware with a stainless cleaner every few months to prevent tea staining, especially near the coast.
- Test the gate monthly so it closes and latches from any position.
- Check fittings for loose spigots, worn hinge parts or damaged glazing rubber.
Common reasons glass pool fences fail inspection
- The gate does not self-close or self-latch from every position.
- Climbable objects within 900mm of the outside of the fence.
- A gap over 100mm under a panel after paving or garden levels change.
- A gap over 100mm between panels, or between a panel and a wall.
- The gate propped open or the latch disabled.
- Plants or trees grown into the non-climbable zone.
Bonus: love the modern look but not the glass cleaning? Try Slimline
If you want a clean, architectural pool fence with less upkeep than glass, our Slimline Pool Fencing is worth a look. Narrow aluminum uprights sit in slim, fully welded rails, custom made for your site, including curves, radius corners and steps.
| Glass pool fencing | Slimline pool fencing | |

| Cleaning | Regular cleaning to keep glass clear | An occasional hose down |
| Curves | Straight panels, curves limited | Curves and radius sections made to suit |
| Finishes | Clear glass, polished, satin or black hardware | Satin Black, Monument, Woodland Grey, Surfmist or custom |
Glass pool fencing FAQs
How high does a glass pool fence need to be in WA?
At least 1200mm, measured from finished ground level on the outside of the fence, with no more than 100mm gap at the bottom.
Is frameless glass pool fencing compliant in WA?
Yes. Frameless glass meets AS 1926.1 when installed with the right gaps, a self-closing and self-latching gate, and a clear 900mm non-climbable zone.
How thick is pool fence glass?
Fence panels are 12mm toughened safety glass. Some gates use 8mm glass to keep them light enough for self-closing hinges.
What is the difference between frameless and semi-frameless?
Frameless glass is held by spigots at the base, with no posts. Semi-frameless glass is held between slim aluminum posts, which costs less and suits sloping sites.
Can a glass pool fence be installed on a slope?
Yes. Panels can be stepped down the slope, or raked panels can follow it for a smooth line.
Does glass pool fencing work near the ocean?
Yes, with quality stainless hardware, insulated spigots where needed, and regular fresh water rinsing to prevent tea staining.
How often is my pool fence inspected?
WA councils inspect pool barriers at least once every four years.
Can I buy glass pool fencing and install it myself?
Yes. Every panel, gate, spigot, hinge and latch is available in our online store. The finished fence must still pass council inspection.
Do you install outside Perth?
Yes. We supply and install glass pool fencing across Perth, Bunbury and the South West.
